The Berlin art world, awakening from its summer slumber, discovered a dozen shows on its calendar as the fall season began. In this article, we would like to share with you the most exciting gallery openings in Berlin, as recommended by Haize.
Ebensperger Gallery
Ebensperger Gallery focuses on young and up-and-coming contemporary art across various genres and formats without any media limitations. It was founded by Patrick Ebensperger, an Austrian gallery owner of the new generation. For the past decade, the gallery has been located in a former crematorium in Wedding.
In Autumn 2023, Ebensperger will move to its new space, the Fichtebunker in Berlin-Kreuzberg. The Fichtebunker is a nineteenth-century gasometer converted into an air-raid shelter during World War II. Subsequently, it was used as a shelter for the homeless and refugees, particularly for those fleeing from East Berlin to the West.
On September 15, 2023, Ebensperger Berlin will present its first exhibition at its new venue: ‘Excitation Resonance’ by Jan St. Werner. For this exhibition, electronic music artist and composer Jan St. Werner will sonically activate the gallery spaces of Fichtebunker with a custom-built loudspeaker panel, projecting electronic sounds through a sequence of resonating chambers. “Excitation Resonance” challenges conventional notions of how space should be perceived and defined, merging the exhibition space, club, echo chamber, and stage. Focus points are in motion, and visual identification and object orientation are in question.
SEXAUER Gallery
Founded by Jan-Philipp Sexauer in 2013, SEXAUER Gallery represents internationally emerging and established artists of a younger generation. The gallery is located in a former industrial building in Berlin Weißensee.
On September 8th, SEXAUER Gallery opened the exhibition “Wenn die Sirenen heulen (it’s on us),” which will run until October 13th. Curated by Anne Mundo and Dirk Teschner, this exhibition features Martin Assig, Aram Bartholl, Hannah Hallermann, Verena Issel, Anne Mundo, Nik Nowak, and Raul Walch.
The exhibition ‘When the Sirens Sound (It’s on Us)‘ aims to showcase different artistic perspectives on the profound issues of climate destruction and war. At its core, it explores the intriguing question of how constant threats reshape our physical and psychological existence.
Alexander Levy Gallery
Alexander Levy Gallery presents an exhibition by Berlin-based artist Sinta Werner, opening on September 15, 2023. Sinta Werner creates wall objects and spatial sculptures that combine glass’s dematerializing and perception-changing properties with the precise structures of contemporary architecture. In her works, massive building structures that follow clear geometric principles overlap, begin to blur and appear fragile. Just as in modern architecture, where the introduction of the glass façade suddenly blurred spatial boundaries, the Berlin-based artist uses precisely this quality of glass as a material in her photographic works. While in some of her works, the mirror functions as an image carrier and thus makes solid building structures appear translucent and light, in others, she layers glass in front of her architectural photographs, breaking up strict geometric forms.
In addition to the exhibitions mentioned above, Haize highly recommends that all art lovers who happen to be in the German capital between September 13th and 17th visit Berlin Art Week. Over the years, Berlin Art Week has quickly earned its position as a well-followed annual event for contemporary art, bringing together the best art fairs and exhibitions. During Berlin Art Week, numerous galleries in Berlin will invite visitors with a special program, offering exciting gallery openings and group shows and readings, performances, and music by the selected artists. The venues include the Berlinische Gallery, Palais Populaire, Akademie der Künste, and more. At the core of Berlin Art Week are two fairs: Art Berlin Contemporary (ABC) and Berlin Art Fair. ABC, founded in 2008 by nine Berlin galleries, breaks away from the traditional art fair concept by showcasing artists’ works in an open space.
