On September 19th, 2024, Haize will present the first-ever hybrid art and fashion exhibition, Future Fossils by SELVA HUYGENS. The brand’s show will premiere worldwide at Haize’s new space at 8 Marvila in Lisbon, in collaboration with Lara Dâmaso for the sound installation and a unique performance.
Selva is the brainchild of Cristian Huygens, an Argentinian-born, Berlin-based interdisciplinary artist who transforms discarded car parts, metal hardware, and industrial waste into functional, wearable pieces. Inspired by brutalist architecture and art, Selva’s work transcends the boundaries of art, fashion, and performance, blending them with a distinctive, white-centric approach. Future Fossils marks the worldwide premiere of Selva Huygens’s hybrid art and fashion exhibition. Featuring armor, wings, and shields made of upcycled metal and car parts, all painted in immaculate white, Selva reveals his dystopian vision of the creative industries he enters. As our society spirals into overproduction and overconsumption, the designer boldly mixes crafts to convey his aesthetics and values. While many are focusing on new technologies and shaping the digital era, the artist questions our relationship with machines and the material world.
Another essential material in Selva’s repertoire is stainless steel hardware, including connectors and hooks. Selva’s pieces are interconnected using exaggerated zippers, metal components, carabiners, and car parts as armatures. Each construction detail is deliberately showcased and highlighted, making imperfections more visible. These components are crucial in assembling the looks, connecting them in adjustable ways to accommodate various body figures and sizes.
Selva initially delved into fashion by creating costumes for performances and exhibitions within ATM banks and public spaces across Berlin and has since become a rising star in the city’s fashion scene. Over the past few months, the emerging brand has already garnered attention from the most powerful players in the creative industries worldwide, including Lady Gaga, Jared Leto, Nicola Formichetti, Patti Wilson, and Michael Philouze, among others.
