Haize Launches First Public Space with Selva Huygens’ “Future Fossils” Exhibition and Live Sound Installation by Lara Damaso
Lisbon, September 23rd – Last Thursday, the Lisbon-based art production company Haize proudly unveiled its first public space with the debut of “Future Fossils,” an immersive exhibition featuring sculptor and designer Selva Huygens alongside a sound installation by Lara Damaso.
“Future Fossils” marks the global premiere of brand’s hybrid art and fashion showcase. The exhibition spotlights Selva Huygens’ unique sculptures—armors, wings, and shields fashioned from upcycled metals and car parts, all painted in immaculate white while magnifying imperfections. Through these pieces, Selva presents a dystopian vision of the creative industries he now enters. In a world consumed by overproduction and overconsumption, Huygens dares to blend craftsmanship with bold aesthetics to express his values. While many artists focus on new technologies and the digital future, Huygens challenges our relationship with machines and the material world, sparking reflection on the consequences of our modern habits.
Lara Damaso’s contribution, a live-recorded sound installation, added another dimension to the opening. On September 19th, around 8 PM, the renowned vocalist entered the central gallery space dressed in a Selva Huygens creation. A microphone suspended from the ceiling awaited her as she gave voice to Huygens’ sculptures through a powerful live performance.
Especially conceived for this show, Damaso’s installation layers four tones of lamentation, evoking a call from the earth itself. These haunting sounds, emerging through the sculptures, urge a radical rethinking of how our society creates, consumes, and lives—a poignant commentary on the environmental and social costs of modern industry.
This show is the first step of a unique collaboration between Selva Huygens and Haize that will produce the first capsule collection of the fashion brand in an innovative fabric made of recycled materials to be released in a few months.
“Future Fossils” is on view at Haize Gallery in Marvila 8 Lisbon, until October 15th, open from Thursdays to Sundays, 12 PM to 8 PM.
