The 25th edition of the CTM Festival opens in Berlin this weekend and will run until February 4th, 2024.
CTM is an annual music and visual arts festival held in Berlin. Founded in 1999, the festival originally focused on electronic music but has since evolved to cover a wide range of genres and artistic activities within the context of sound and club cultures under the banner “Festival for Adventurous Music and Art.”
Changing through various shapes and formats over the years, the festival currently takes place as a 10-day-long event. In addition to the music program, it features an extensive daytime program of workshops, art installations, panel discussions, screenings, and presentations that illustrate the latest artistic, technological, and economic developments in music and media cultures. Through the festival, as well as various events curated by CTM throughout the year, the organization reflects the latest musical and technological currents.
Every year, the CTM program strives to spotlight artists from areas beyond the typical realms of electronic music and experimental art. The theme of the 2024 festival is “Sustain.” The word “sustain” touches on opposite poles of current experiences. It speaks to both the empathy and determination that can nourish us, as well as fears, loss, and pain. “Sustain” encapsulates what we are going through while simultaneously evoking the strength to face these challenges. It is both descriptive and imperative, serving as a call to embrace more interconnected ways of life that acknowledge their interdependence. What if “sustain” were a sound? What would the resulting music sound like? In its 25th edition, CTM Festival is attempting to answer this question.
This year, under the theme “Sustain,” the festival presents the current state of daring music—from the dance floor to conceptual pieces—at remarkable locations for Berlin’s culture and nightlife, such as Berghain, radialsystem, OXI, silent green, RSO.Berlin, and Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz.
CTM 2024 will showcase a diverse lineup, featuring international artists such as Kali Malone, Félicia Atkinson, Crys Cole, SØS Gunver Ryberg, Petra Hermanova, Max Eilbacher, Phillip Sollmann, Mick Barr, Otay:onii, 40Hurtz, Hazey Haze, and more. The performances will take place at venues such as Berghain, Radialsystem, Silent Green, and Volksbühne at Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz.
The festival’s club program kicked off on Friday at Berghain with a hypnotic night, featuring Robert Henke’s immersive live set exploring the new sound system. Föllakzoid’s minimalist approach in their new album V creates space for transcendence. The Panorama Bar program, curated in collaboration with Skrillex, includes Pisitakun’s “The Three Sounds of Revolution” project.
The 2024 edition of CTM presents itself as a mixture of sensitive and thoughtful, disturbing and liberating sound designs from artists who are appearing for the first time as part of CTM, as well as those who have already contributed to previous editions.
